The aoudad (Ammotragus lervia), also known as the Barbary sheep, is a hardy and adaptable species of wild sheep native to the rocky mountains and semi-arid regions of North Africa. This species has a distinctive coat that is sandy-brown, helping them blend seamlessly into the rocky, arid landscapes they call home. Aoudads have a thick, shaggy mane that extends from their throat down to their chest and forelegs, which provides insulation against the chilly nights in their high-altitude habitats. They are agile climbers and prefer rugged, mountainous terrains with steep cliffs and rocky outcrops, where they can easily navigate and find shelter. Aoudads are particularly fond of regions like the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and Algeria, as well as the remote, dry valleys and plateaus. They are highly resilient and can survive on minimal water, getting most of their moisture from the plants they consume.
