The elk bull, or male elk (Cervus canadensis), is one of the most iconic and majestic members of the deer family. During the summer months, they have a reddish-brown coat that blends well with their forested surroundings, while in winter, their coat thickens and turns a darker, more grayish-brown to help them withstand the colder temperatures. A distinctive feature of the elk bull is its large, impressive antlers, which can span up to four feet and are shed and regrown each year. Elk bulls primarily inhabit forests, meadows, and grasslands across North America, ranging from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Northwest, and even into the Appalachian region. They prefer areas with a mix of dense forest cover for protection and open meadows for grazing. During the rutting season in the fall, elk bulls can often be found in valleys and open areas, where they bugle loudly to attract females and challenge rival males.
