White Tail

The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is one of the most widespread and adaptable deer species in North America, thriving in a variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, swamps, and even suburban areas. Named for the distinctive white underside of its tail, which it raises as a warning signal when alarmed, this deer has a coat that changes with the seasons. In summer, its fur is a reddish-brown color, providing camouflage in dense foliage, while in winter, it turns grayish-brown to blend with barren landscapes. White-tailed deer are highly adaptable herbivores, feeding on grasses, leaves, fruits, acorns, and even crops when available. They are agile and can reach speeds of up to 30 mph, leaping over obstacles with ease to escape predators like coyotes, bobcats, and wolves. Found across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and even parts of Central and South America, white-tailed deer have successfully expanded their range due to their ability to thrive in diverse environments.
